Review: Wargame: Red Dragon
Posted by Donster on: 2014-04-30 15:06:07 in category: Strategy and Wargaming News [ Print ]
By Rob Zacny, IGN
The Wargame series is about combining dazzling spectacle with brutal tactical realism and more real-world military hardware than you'll find in a lifetime's subscription to Jane's Defence. Wargame: Red Dragon follows along the evolutionary path set by its immediate predecessor, AirLand Battle, by introducing even more armies, more campaigns, and a new tactical environment: the ocean. As you might expect from a third game in a real-time strategy series, Red Dragon's additions aren’t gamechangers the way AirLand Battle's dynamic campaigns and aircraft are. They do, however, add some welcome variety to the old formula and also make Red Dragon the biggest, most comprehensive Wargame yet. But this progress comes with some surprising backward steps.

Stronghold Crusader 2 Meet the Saladin Video Released
Posted by Donster on: 2014-04-11 17:42:39 in category: Strategy and Wargaming News [ Print ]
Firefly Studios has just released new gameplay footage of the Saladin, one of eight unique AI characters to feature in Stronghold Crusader 2 at launch. The new video includes developer commentary on Saladin’s backstory, choice of units, attacking style and weaknesses.
In a new blog post on the official Crusader 2 website Firefly expand on the video’s content, discussing the Arabic campaign and advances in AI that players can expect from the game:
“A classic character returning from the original Stronghold: Crusader, the Saladin is essentially the good guy in Stronghold Crusader 2. After blasting through the Crusader campaign you will be invited to play as Saladin in his fight to take back the holy lands from Richard the Lionheart and the invading Crusader hordes. Without spoiling anything you can expect to encounter a few familiar faces on your road to confront Richard. Some will be friendly with others out to get you, so keep your guard up and exact revenge when necessary!
Since the team is bringing Saladin back from the first game we don’t want to change too much with regards to his play style. As such when it comes to choice of units and AI behaviour it is largely business as usual, the difference comes when we start attacking Saladin and seeing just how he reacts. Our game’s AI has been built from the ground up with the classic level of Crusader difficulty in mind. Players can therefore expect to encounter a fair amount of resistance when playing against Saladin in skirmish mode, where the AI has free reign to expand its castle and harass the players as it deems fit.”

SEGA of America, Inc. and SEGA Europe, Ltd. today announced that Total War: ROME II will receive its second major Campaign Pack DLC March 27, 2014.
Dropping players into the Western Mediterranean at the outbreak of the second Punic War, Hannibal at the Gates features a new campaign map focused on the tinderbox geopolitical situation that brought two ancient world superpowers to all-out war; with sworn rivals Scipio and Hannibal at the very heart of the conflict. Five playable factions will feature a wealth of new units. Main protagonists Rome and Carthage will benefit from a new civil tech tree based around diplomacy, while the challenge in the shadow of these mighty empires for newcomers Syacuse, the Arevaci and the Lusitani will be formidable.
In addition to this, another significant free content update for ROME II will also drop soon, benefitting all players regardless of whether they own any DLC. Details will be revealed in the next episode of community TV show Rally Point, coming soon.
ROME II itself has continued to sell strongly since its launch in September last year, DLC and free content being released regularly. With more than one million units sold by the end of 2013 and continuing high performance, it remains the fastest-selling and most commercially successful Total War game to date.
“ROME II was hugely ambitious for our studio,” said Mike Simpson, Creative Director at CA, “We do regret that some reviewers and core fans didn’t get everything they wanted from it. We are committed to improving and adding to the game over the coming months; we very much want ROME II to be remembered as one of our best.”

BattleGoat Announces Supreme Ruler 1936 Release Date, Preview Trailer, and More
Posted by Donster on: 2014-03-14 15:24:57 in category: Strategy and Wargaming News [ Print ]
BattleGoat Studios has been thrilled with the positive response to the Steam Early Access beta of Supreme Ruler 1936, their WWII strategy game currently under development. David Thompson, Lead Designer and Co Founder of BattleGoat commented, "We love Early Access! The feedback from players that have participated has been great for both testing the game and making changes to better the gameplay experience. In the three months since we released the Early Access, we've pushed nine updates and we expect this rate to continue right up until our official release."
Originally planned for release late Q1 2014, the changes and additions from player feedback have resulted in a slight delay of the anticipated release date to May 9th 2014. When asked further about the success of their Early Access beta, Thompson replied, "The Early Access sales have been above expectations and this has given us the freedom to incorporate some new ideas and to improve the historical content of the campaigns." Supreme Ruler 1936 is BattleGoat's first self-published title, the previous two titles were published by Paradox Interactive. Early Access to the game is available for 25% off the release retail price.
BattleGoat has posted a new pre-release game trailer to YouTube (02:59), and is also announcing that the studio will be previewing the game to press and the public at this year's PAX East in Boston, April 11th - 13th, 2014.
In a more lighthearted manner, Thompson also said about the delay, "Just like the German drive on Moscow, our progress has also been greatly impeded by an unusually tough winter... The studio was without power for a week, there have been several days lost to heavy snow falls, and the so called 'Polar Vortex' bitter cold has definitely slowed us in our tracks."
