The Intel Haswell Refresh Review: Core i7-4790, i5-4690 and i3-4360 Tested

Computer processors for PC like devices fall into four broad categories, starting with the smartphone/tablet, then the notebook, the desktop and finally the extreme desktop/server. These segments have different cadence formats from each of the companies that compete between new designs. For longer cadences it makes sense to launch an improved product in the middle of that cadence taking advantage of minor production improvements. To that end, Intel is updating their June 2013 Haswell CPU line with a ‘Haswell Refresh’ – 20+ CPUs aimed to be faster at similar price points to the original Haswell release.

The Intel LGA 2011 socket and Intel X79 Express chipset came to market in November 2011 when Intel first introduced 6-core Sandy Bridge-E processors. This platform has been around for quite some time and early adopters might be itching to update to something a bit newer. Intel today is finally introducing Ivy Bridge-E processors for LGA 2011 platforms, which means that this will be a drop in CPU replacement (after a BIOS flash) on some of the Intel X79 Chipset motherboard that have been sold over the years. Many companies like ASUS will also be doing an ‘X79 Refresh’ and coming out with a number of boards that have updated components for those looking for something more than just a drop-in processor replacement.

What do you do when you're the fastest thing around? You just keep on WINNING. It's as if there was tiger blood coursing through your veins. You're so good, you're bi-winning. Heck, with a six core processor at your disposal, you'd be hexa-winning. Ol' Charlie needs one of these things to go with his rock-star life style. As desktop processors go, Intel's Core i7 900 series line-up is pretty much the Charlie of the computing world. Tiger blood and all, though people might ask what kind of drug you were on and the response would have to be "Core i" of course. It's a little like crack only it doesn't make you lose your voice. Though you might want to occasionally unplug the bastard because, dude, it fires in a way that, we don't know, might not be from this terrestrial realm. And the ladies. Well, let's just say that's not going to be a problem. Ever. And it's not about the money, honest. Ahh, it's good to be the king. Yeah.

But let's move forward, shall we? Intel decided they would as well and recently they launched a speed bump of their flagship Extreme Edition Core i7 processor, known as the Core i7 990X. It's unlocked and clocked at 3.45GHz stock speed with a Turbo Boost top-end speed of 3.73GHz. Intel claims its the fastest desktop chip on the planet; like geek tiger blood for your PC.

Today Intel has dropped the NDA for its first consumer 6-core processor and thus opened the flood gates for Core i7-980X Extreme Edition reviews. Priced at $999, the new chip (codename Gulftown) is a 32nm hexa-core part clocked at 3.33 GHz (3.60 GHz in Turbo mode) with 12 threads, 12MB of L3 cache, and a TDP of 130W. Being an uber-end CPU, the i7-980X EE targets the LGA 1366 platform and will work on current X58 motherboard after a BIOS update.

Currently, the Core i7-980X is listed on pre-order but is expected to start shipping at the end of this month so you have some time to read the reviews below and form an opinion about it. We'll just say this - it's fast and expensive, and will remain Intel's top of the tops until next year so this is as good as it gets.

Review: Intel Core i7-930 CPU

While Intel has recently been busy launching Core i3 and i5 CPUs, it hasn't done anything new with its range of LGA1366 Core i7 processors for several months.

However, Intel seems to have finally found time to tweak its flagship CPU series by introducing one new model - the superb Core i7-930.

Both CPUs have the same 133MHz QPI bus, the i7-930 runs at a marginally upgraded 2.8GHz compared to the 2.66GHz for the now-classic i7-920. Just like the entire i7 desktop range, the i7-930 is made from the same 45nm transistors and it also shares the same enthusiast loving D0-stepping design as its i7-920 brother.

Intel has got the ball rolling early into the new year with its latest Westmere architecture; today Intel lifts the curtain on its first desktop 32nm Clarkdale CPU with the inclusion of an integrated GPU.

Only a single model represents the Clarkdale launch today, with several more to arrive in the lineup very soon. This initial model is the Core i5-661 operating at a stock clock speed of 3.33GHz and carrying 4MB of L3 Smart Cache. As mentioned, this 32nm CPU is also a first in that it carries a second 45nm package which includes the PCI-E controller, memory controller and of course a graphics processor.

There's also a bit of coverage online today which looks at the mobile side of things for Westmere. Codenamed Arrandale, these Core i3 and Core i5 mobile chips also house an integrated DDR3 memory controller and GPU and will be found in notebooks targeted more so towards the mainstream market segment.

Intel Hopes 48-core Chip Will Solve New Challenges

Pushing several steps farther in the multicore direction, Intel on Wednesday demonstrated a fully programmable 48-core processor it thinks will pave the way for massive data computers powerful enough to do more of what humans can.

The 1.3-billion transistor processor, called Single-chip Cloud Computer (SCC) is successor generation to the 80-core "Polaris" processor that Intel's Tera-scale research project produced in 2007. Unlike that precursor, though, the second-generation model is able to run the standard software of Intel's x86 chips such as its Pentium and Core models.

Intel Sheds Some Light on Core i7 Derivative Branding

The rumor mill has been calling upcoming Lynnfield processors "Core i5" for some time now, but at Computex, Intel's Francois Piednoel told us rumors about the name were wrong. Other sources indicated that the chips would be branded Core i7, while future dual-core, 32nm Westmere CPUs would be called Core i5.

Intel Corporate Communications Manager Bill Calder has now clarified the situation in a blog post about Intel's new branding initiatives. Apparently, the truth lies somewhere in between.
