DARPA's Anti-Submarine Warfare Game Goes Live

Posted by Donster on: 2011-04-07 17:29:55 in category: Naval Combat News [ Print ]

Can you best an enemy submarine commander so he can’t escape into the ocean depths? If you think you can, you are invited to put yourself into the virtual driver’s seat of one of several Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) configurations and show the world how you can use its capabilities to follow an enemy submarine.

DARPA’s ACTUV program is developing a fundamentally new tool for the Navy’s ASW toolkit and seeks your help to explore how best to use this tool to track quiet submarines. Before autonomous software is developed for ACTUV’s computers, DARPA needs to determine what approaches and methods are most effective. To gather information from a broad spectrum of users, ACTUV has been integrated into the Dangerous Waters game. DARPA is offering this new ACTUV Tactics Simulator for free public download.

This software has been written to simulate actual evasion techniques used by submarines, challenging each player to track them successfully. Your tracking vessel is not the only ship at sea, so you’ll need to safely navigate among commercial shipping traffic as you attempt to track the submarine, whose driver has some tricks up his sleeve. You will earn points as you complete mission objectives, and will have the opportunity to see how you rank against the competition on DARPA’s leaderboard page. You can also share your experiences and insights from playing the simulator with others.

As you complete each scenario in the simulation, you may submit your tracking tactics to DARPA for analysis. DARPA will select the best tactics and build them into the ACTUV prototype.

Battlefront.com Announces PT Boats: South Gambit Self-standing Add-on

Posted by Donster on: 2010-10-12 16:34:38 in category: Naval Combat News [ Print ]

WWII naval warfare is back! With more campaigns, more combat aircraft, new ships and even more fascinating gameplay, PT Boats: South Gambit is setting the bar even higher for WW2 era naval combat simulations.

The original game - “PT Boats: Knights of the Sea” - has brought attention to a new and previously little known aspect of naval warfare during the Second World War. Now, with the large-scale self-standing*) add-on PT Boats: South Gambit, you will find yourself commanding a lethal torpedo boat and its crew in the very heart of two entirely new theaters of war. The long list of authentic warships, boats, weapons and aircraft available in PT Boats is now further extended with the legendary Soviet attack plane IL-2, the German torpedo bomber He-111H-6, the Italian cruiser Condottieri, and many many more.

You will join battle in the Mediterranean and transport British troops and supplies to Libya and Tunis, and escort convoys to the besieged island of Malta; just as if you were participating in the real historical operations “Harpoon”, “Vigorous” and “Pedestal”. Then you will be relocated to the Black Sea, where some of the most dramatic historical battles were raging. Nazi “Kriegsmarine” will do its best to disrupt sea communications between Sevastopol and Novorossiysk. So, you and your PT boat will play an important role in night raids against enemy bases and then in artillery attacks on the German Navy in Yalta and Anapa.

PT Boats: South Gambit does NOT require "PT Boats: Knights of the Sea" in order to play!

Ironclads: Schleswig War 1864 Review

Posted by Donster on: 2010-06-04 18:24:20 in category: Naval Combat News [ Print ]

By James Cobb @ Armchair General

Neglected conflicts are often the most interesting ones to game. Few people know about the second Schleswig-Holstein conflict of 1864, not to mention that it had a very interesting naval component. The conflict was officially between Denmark and the German Confederation, but Prussia and Austria did the heavy lifting for the Germans. Naval actions were fought in two stages: Prussian attempts to break the Danish blockade in the Baltic and the later Austrian effort to control approaches to Denmark in the North Sea. Ironclads: Schleswig War depicts only the Baltic action, leaving the much tenser North Sea struggle for a future game.

Das Sims

By Neal Stevens @ SubSim

There was a scene in Das Boot where...oh hell, this preview is coming just two weeks before the game is going to be released, no time for prosy openings. Normally I would be writing this preview a few months before release day, but Ubisoft has been shielding this game carefully. The devs demo'ed Silent Hunter 5 in September at the Copenhagen Subsim meet, but since then, there's been a total blackout of information. It took a mighty effort to get details about the most basic elements, but since our phone interview in Jan, followed by the revelation of a DRM scheme that many players object to, there's almost nothing about the game left to guess about except: will it be any good? That question will have to wait a few weeks for the review to answer. But for now, I can shed some light on the overall scope of the game, and many of the elements created by Ubisoft Romania looking to achieve a Das Boot experience.

For 2010, Ubisoft plans to release the fifth version in the installation. Silent Hunter 5: The Battle of the Atlantic revisits the theatre first visited in Silent Hunter II and Silent Hunter III. While this may seem like a rehash, there are some significant differences to this title that make it appealing to the virtual submariner. I have had the pleasure to put in about ten hours with the title and look forward to putting more time in after the game is released.

Ubisoft has released a new movie and eight more screenshots from Silent Hunter 5, the fifth iteration of the submarine simulation series developed by Ubisoft Romania and due to hit the store shelves in March 2010. Silent Hunter 5 will take players behind the periscope of a German U-boat to take on the Allied Forces in famous battles across the vast Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. For the first time in the history of the series, players can live the life of a submarine captain from a first-person view and lead a crew in a critical campaign.

PT Boats: Knights of the Sea highlights a forgotten part of World War II naval combat: the torpedo boat. Others can control those big, powerful ships with extremely large guns, but we shall control the fast and elusive PT boats and take them all down. Take that! How does PT Boats separate itself from other naval games?

PT Boats: Knights of the Sea - Strategy/Tactical Mode Video

Posted by Donster on: 2009-12-10 16:40:28 in category: Naval Combat News [ Print ]

Battlefront.com, an independent internet-based publisher for superior war and strategy games and one of the internets largest wargaming communities, and Akella, one of Eastern Europe’s leading development and publishing houses, proudly present a completely new in-game video for the upcoming naval simulation PT Boats: Knights of the Sea!

PT Boats: Knights of the Sea really is “two-games-in-one”. On the one hand it is a full blown naval simulation, allowing you to relive the dangers and adrenaline rush of fighting on board of a PT Boat of the “mosquito fleet”. You can man almost every position in the first person, and manage almost every aspect of your boat. On the other hand, PT Boats comes with a full featured strategic layer, allowing players to manage not only their boat, but basically an entire fleet from an overhead tactical view (or the 3D action view). Today’s new video showcases combat in the tactical/strategic mode.
