When deciding what graphics card to buy a significant part of the decision should come down to the design used. Budget tends to establish which GPU we can get but the specific model can make a significant difference. For example, is it overclocked to boost performance (and value)? Does it use premium components which should last longer? Or which card has the quietest, or coolest running design? With their Vapor-X models Sapphire have often tried to hit all three of those areas and the subject of our review today, the R9 290 Vapor-X OC Edition, really looks to take things to the extreme.

AMD Pulls Catalyst 14.4 WHQL, Reposts it with a Cautionary Note

Over the weekend enthusiasts couldn't find AMD's Catalyst software suite 14.4 WHQL on the company's Game portal. The company reposted it a little later, with a cautionary note about why they had to pull the download. Apparently, the AMD motherboard chipset drivers included in the suite were later found to be unstable on some systems, particularly the southbridge AHCI driver. The issue seems to affect only certain southbridges, the SB700, SB710, and SB750. There's no word on newer generations of southbridges with SATA 6 Gb/s controllers and FIS switches, such as SB850, SB950, and A-series FCH chipsets, being affected. Our SB950-based motherboard isn't showing any signs of instability. AMD rebuilt the suite without the affected driver when it re-posted the suite later on Monday.

AMD Catalyst 14.4 WHQL Released

AMD released a WHQL-signed version of its Catalyst 14.4 software suite, its first in four months (the previous one being 13.12 WHQL). The driver builds on the Catalyst 14.4 Release Candidate the company shipped out a little earlier this month, to lend immediate support for Radeon R9 295X2, which hit the shelves on the 21st. The four highlights of Catalyst 14.4 include support for the R9 295X2, CrossFire frame-pacing improvements for a number of games, full support for OpenGL 4.4 API, and bug-fixes for AMD Mantle API.

Among the games AMD worked to improve CrossFire performance of, include Crysis 3, which sees improved frame-pacing; Far Cry 3, which sees improved 3-GPU and 4-GPU scaling; Anno 2070, which sees an overall CrossFire scaling improvement of 34 percent; Titanfall, which sees reduced game flickering an micro-stutter; and Metro: Last Light, which sees 10 percent improvement in CrossFire scaling. The driver also addresses bugs related to 3x1 Eyefinity setups using three Ultra HD displays. For gamers running Battlefield 4 with its Mantle renderer, AMD addressed the performance slowdown seen when switching windows using Alt+Tab; and fuzzy textures when playing the game on rotated displays.

Review: VisionTek CryoVenom R9 290

It has been several months since AMD shook up the GPU market a bit with its R9 series of GPUs. Now that the dust has settled there has been time for AMD partners to design better cooling solutions for the Hawaii based GPUs at the top end of the R9 lineup. When the 290 and 290x first released there was a firestorm of complaints surrounding the massive amounts of heat generated and the lack of significant cooling solutions. Basically the reference design cooler was a major flop that actually caused performance loses. The 290 and 290x GPUs were known to throttle down to lower core speeds to stay within the thermal envelope. In some cases, this resulted in a 290 outperforming a 290x in benches or other counter intuitive results… OUCH!

AMD partners proved to be up to the challenge though, releasing GPUs with their custom cooling solutions that offered better heat dissipation without adding to the noise penalty suffered by the reference cooler. This is all fine and dandy, but where does any of this leave the hardcore water cooling enthusiast? It leaves many researching to see which GPU from each manufacturer is and is not compatible with certain water blocks and adding additional cost to an already costly product. One of those OEMs, VisionTek, wanted to lend a hand in this process by taking away all guess work, and even the installation. They are now offering a GPU which comes ready to be incorporated into a custom waco system out of the box. I am happy to introduce the CryoVenom R9 290 LiquidCooled series GPU.

NVIDIA has rolled out a new graphics card driver, the GeForce 335.23. This WHQL-certified release has support for GeForce 8, 9, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700 and Titan Series cards and ION GPUs and it brings 'enhanced' GPU clock offset options for the Maxwell-powered GeForce GTX 750 Ti and GTX 750 models, plus some updated SLI and 3D Vision profiles. NVIDIA Releases GeForce 334.89 WHQL Drivers

With the debut of new video cards (GTX 750, GTX 750 Ti, and GTX TITAN Black), that obviously means new drivers must arrive to support them. New NVIDIA GeForce drivers, 334.89 WHQL, have indeed been released today, adding support for the aforementioned three cards, but even owners of existing NVIDIA cards will want to update.

Several 3D Vision profiles have been added or updated (check the link below), while SLI profiles have been added for Assassin's Creed: Freedom Cry, Assassin's Creed Liberation HD, Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut, Gas Guzzlers, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, and The Crew. Meanwhile, overall performance has been optimized for F1 2013, Sleeping Dogs, Hitman Absolution, Company of Heroes 2, Assassin's Creed 3, BioShock Infinite, Sniper Elite V2, and Total War: Rome 2.

With the excitement surrounding custom versions of AMD’s R9 290X, the amount of time between the initial release and availability of board partner designs came as a surprise to some. It’s taken well over two months but there’s good reason for that: much like gamers have been looking for lower temperatures and reduced acoustics, actually engineering a heatsink that’s capable of delivering on those expectations is easier said than done. This is why it has taken XFX and their competition so long to release their respective solutions.

The star of this particular show is the R9 290X Double Dissipation or “DD” for short which happens to be the mid-tier card in XFX’s current R9 290X lineup. While they have a completely reference design and the higher end, overclocked and custom cooled Black Edition, the DD is equipped with stock clock speeds and the same GHOST 2 heatsink as the Black Edition.

AMD Releases Catalyst 13.12 WHQL Video Card Drivers

AMD has released Catalyst 13.12 WHQL video card drivers. We aren’t exactly sure what is new as the release notes compare the new Catalyst 13.2 WHQL drivers against AMD Catalyst 13.9 drivers. We have no idea why AMD doing this comparison and have asked for the list of changes since the latest Catalyst 13.11 beta drivers. AMD said that Catalyst 13.12 it includes all of updates found within AMD Catalyst 13.11 Beta V9.5, but we aren’t sure if anything else was added. AMD also stated that Catalyst 14.1 Beta drivers would be out early in 2014. Go ahead and grab Catalyst 13.12 WHQL 32-bit or Catalyst 13.12 WHQL 64-bit drivers if you want to run the latest and greatest.

UPDATE: AMD informed us that Catalyst 13.12 WHQL is basically the WHQL version of the latest 13.11 Beta driver.

NVIDIA has today made available a new graphics card driver, the WHQL-certified GeForce 331.82. This fresh build is claimed to offer the 'best possible gaming experience' in Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag and Need for Speed: Rivals, and includes fixes, as well tweaks to boost performance in various games.

According to NVIDIA this driver increases SLI performance (when running at 4K resolutions) by as much as 50% in key titles like Metro: Last Light, Crysis 3, and Battlefield 4. The GeForce 331.82 supports the GeForce 8, 9, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 and 700 Series cards and the ION and ION LE GPUs.

Two days ago AMD allowed us to review, in a limited capacity, their new R9 280X. Today the review restrictions are released so we can now compare different versions of the card and that starts with Gigabytes R9 280X WindForce 3X model in its factory overclocked form. We will be comparing it to the two closest NVIDIA models (pricing wise) in the form of the GTX 760 and 770 (both OC models) as well as the part the 280X replaces, the 7970 GHZ. Added in is another 280X OC model and we are testing on the latest i7-4960X CPU, Windows 8.1 and games such as Battlefield 4, F1 2013 and Total War: Rome 2.

AMD has released their Catalyst Software Suite Version 13.9 for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 users. This is AMD’s first logo certified driver for Windows 8.1 and contains numerous updates including WDDM 1.3 support for a variety of AMD Accelerated Processors (“Kabini”, Temash”, Richland”, and “Trinity”). Even though it doesn’t include support for Frame Pacing of the latest AMD CrossFire optimizations, the AMD Catalyst 13.9 update does contain new OpenGL improvements and AMD Enduro technology enhancements.

NVIDIA Rolls Out GeForce 327.23 WHQL Drivers

NVIDIA has rolled out the latest GeForce 327.23 WHQL software, which adds drivers and related system software for NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards. Version 327.23 WHQL comes with logo-certification for Windows 8.1. Its changelog over GeForce 326.80 is tiny, including a bug-fix for PhysX default device selection, and an issue with 3D Vision viewer, but sizable, compared to GeForce 320.49. It improves game-specific performance for a a handful games (compared to GeForce 320.49), including Up to 15% in Dirt: Showdown on GTX 770, up to 19% in Dirt: Showdown on GTX 770 SLI, up to 11% in F1 2012 on GTX 770 SLI, and up to 6% in Tomb Raider, and up to 6% in Tomb Raider on GTX 770. NVIDIA also talked about performance improvements "across the board," without mentioning specifics in the release notes. The driver updates PhysX system software version to 9.13.0725.
