New Screens: GI Combat
We have new screens from the upcoming WWII strategy game, GI Combat Episode1: Battle of Normandy. G.I. Combat engulfs the dynamic conflicts of World War II and features a three-dimensional environment detail for terrain, armor penetration, vehicle movement, and weapon-fire. Players campaign American or German troops through tactical excursions of enemy artillery barrages, beach landings, snipers, bridge crossings, and loads of heavy tank fire. GI Combat will feature campaigns with dozen of historical and hypothetical scenarios beginning at D-Day, and carrying through Patton's lightening breakout from the Normandy Beachhead. GI Combat Episode 1: Battle of Normandy will ship to stores on October 29.
New Screens: Hearts of Iron
Strategy First has sent us the new screens from, Hearts of Iron, a World War II game of Grand Strategic scope. The game map spans the entire world and allows players to take the war to any front they choose. Players will be able to play any nation in the world and take control of the epic struggle between the great alliances of the new world orders of Fascism, Communism and Democracy. Hearts of Iron was developed by the team behind Europa Universalis I & II. Hearts of Iron will arrive on November 12.
Surround Gaming Update
Matrox has announced Surround Gaming support for Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, along with the expansion packs: Desert Seige and Island Thunder. For the patch and config info, screen shots and their Apptimizer info to automatically configure Ghost Recon for Surround Gaming, click here. Matrox will also be adding upcoming support to Combat Flight Simulation 3.

STRIKER 40 Grenade Machine Gun
General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products, a business unit of General Dynamics, received a sole-source $7.2M contract award from U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) for production of the STRIKER 40 (MK47) 40mm Grenade Machine Gun system.
"The STRIKER 40 will be the first integrated air burst-capable crew-served weapon system fielded in the world," said Colonel Tom Spellissy, Program Executive Officer for Special Programs, USSOCOM. "It is a very effective system with first-round hit capability, it is highly reliable and it is easy for soldiers to use."
The STRIKER 40's integrated gun, sight and fire control system is significantly more accurate than any previously fielded grenade launcher. The system incorporates the latest targeting and sensing technology with a computerized fire control for operation under all weather conditions, day or night.
The STRIKER 40 is capable of firing programmable air burst ammunition made by NAMMO of Norway as well as all conventional high velocity 40mm ammunition in the U.S. inventory. General Dynamics is partnered with Raytheon in Forest, Mississippi to build the Lightweight Video System (LVS) fire control designed by General Dynamics Canada. Work will be performed at sites in Saco, Maine and Burlington, Vermont.
U.S. Navy Awards Tactical Tomahawk Contract
The U.S. Navy awarded Raytheon Company a $36 million fixed price incentive contract for the Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) of the Tactical Tomahawk. The contract calls for the production and delivery of 25 Tactical Tomahawk All-Up Round missiles.
"This award is the direct result of the outstanding success of the first flight demonstration on Aug. 23," said Louise Francesconi, president, Raytheon Missile Systems, Tucson, Ariz. "I am proud of the progress that the joint Raytheon-U.S. Navy team has made in taking us one step closer to Fleet introduction."
Tomahawk, the surface- and submarine-launched, precision strike stand-off weapon, is the Navy's weapon of choice for critical, long-range precision strike missions against high value, heavily defended targets.
Tactical Tomahawk will incorporate innovative technologies to provide new operational capabilities while dramatically reducing acquisition and life cycle costs. Scheduled for fleet introduction in 2004, the Tactical Tomahawk will cost less than half of a newly built Block III missile and will have the capability to respond to changing battlefield conditions through the use of its loiter and mission flex features.
World War II Ace Foss Hospitalized
Retired U.S. Marine Maj. Joseph J. Foss, a top World War II flying ace who served as governor of South Dakota and the first commissioner of the American Football League, was in critical condition Wednesday after suffering an apparent aneurysm. Foss, a fighter pilot in the South Pacific, was believed to be the first to break the 1918 aerial record of Eddie Rickenbacker, who shot down 25 German planes during World War I. [More...]
