Switching to Glide, however, made the race a no contest. At 1024x768 Banshee cranked out a whopping 45 fps in the no cockpit MFD view to TNT2's 34 fps, a huge 30% difference! The frame rate split in virtual cockpit view was equally substantial, with Banshee at 36 and TNT2 at 27 (800x600). The conclusion, however, isn't quite as obvious at it appears, because Glide is receiving less support from developers, and TNT2 is almost as fast as V3 under D3d. Janes Fleet Command, for example, will only run at 800x600 under Glide: if you want to go higher than that you must run under Direct3d. In spite of that, this part of the testing leaves me doubtful about the ability of TNT2 to replace Voodoo3 as the speed leader in simulation gaming. The TNT2 Ultra should be about 15% more powerful, but it's unlikely that will be enough power to make the difference unless there is sufficient room for the drivers to improve. What about the Matrox G400 MAX? We'll have to wait and see. |
